Thank you for your time and for answering our 10 selected questions for the artist of the month feature this month, August 2020. You guys have performed at the Swakopmund Night Market a couple of times now and seem to be a real crowd pleaser. We love your way of telling a story through your music and the entertainment factor you incorporate into the show, it gives the audience a real sense of Namibian culture and a chance to experience a rare art form of storytelling through music. It’s a wonderful spectacle to watch.
1. How did African Vocals materlise into the a cappella group it is today?
African Vocals was formed in 2012 by a group of friends when said members had graduated from high school and, as a result, were not allowed to sing in school choirs anymore.
2. What does the group stand for?
African Vocals wants to represent authentic Namibian and African culture and tradition through our music, and want to give a positive image of Namibia wherever we perform.
3. Can one audition to become part of the group?
We sometimes have auditions if there is a need for a new singer.
4. What is your biggest success as a group?
Our biggest success is that we have kept this group active for 8 years now and to have managed to successfully run 3 long tours in Germany in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
We had planned another tour to Germany in 2020, which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to Covid-19. We look forward to travelling again when restriction have been lifted.
5. Where have you travelled to?
We have travelled to Germany and to a couple of destinations within Namibia.
6. How many CDs have you recorded?
We have recorded two CD’s, one live and one in studio as well as a live DVD.
7. Tell us about a typical practice session?
We do vocal training, warm ups, choreography training, drums and rhythm exercises and we work on new songs.
You can get an impression of our rehearsals by visiting our live sessions on Sundays at 6 pm here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsWgx7U7yu0pn9Pf8-sRJLA
8. How do you get ready for a show?
We do physical and vocal warm up as well as individual methods to focus and get into show mode.
9. What is your favourite performance to date?
In general we love performing most when we have a good interaction with and feedback from the audience. The biggest and most impressive audience and most awesome venue we had was in Hannover on tour in Germany last year, when we performed on the closing event of the a cappella week in the Kuppelsaal of the Congress Centre.
10. How have you experienced performing at the SNM?
It is a great initiative and gave us a good experience and opportunity to showcase in our home town.
